Originally published in 2020, Critter’s Wimpy World is a contemporary classic — a luminous collection of Wimpy’s mid- to late-life touristic snapshots from the nineteen-sixties and -seventies. Wimpy World provides a rich depiction of archaic fashions, and delivers an extraordinary dialogue of thematic echoes and visual rhymes.
In 2022, Wimpy World will be among the featured titles on Inférieur, and a selection of unpublished images from this body of work will be part of Wimpy World (wimpyworld.com), a joint web-site with the poet Jonathan Tree.
Wimpy (born in Rochelle Park, New Jersey, 1913; died in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, 2014) moved to North Carolina in 1931 to attend Duke University. He would become a successful businessman, a long-time subscriber of National Geographic, and an enthusiastic traveler. In 1979, a year after his retirement, Wimpy embarked on an unforgettable “Round the World” trip with his wife Elsie and a group of their friends.
Critter is a graphic designer, photographer, writer, editor, and the executive director of Inférieur. He is also the founder of Things Change Over Time, an independent publishing company based in North Carolina. It was from Wimpy that Critter received his first camera.
